How has Yoga Changed Your Life?

Community.
Health.
Awareness.

Yoga has transformed a multitude of dimensions in my life. Community, health, and awareness would be the top highlights of how starting a regular practice has benefited my world. Most notably, I became connected with a wonderful community of people that inspired deeper conversations and meaningful friendships. I became plugged into a world of people with high vibration and consciousness that was beyond any price. Being surrounded by these likeminded people inspired a more healthy way of living. I was introduced to cleansing which created a cascade of healthier decisions and soon a way of life. By learning the yoga philosophy (one of my biggest passions!) this cleaner way of life (physically, mentally, & emotionally) became ingrained into my way of life and hence being more self-aware was naturally the next step. By stepping on to my mat day after day, month after month, I became more aware of what I was putting into my body and how it affected my practice or my mood. Having more awareness is not always the easier way, but it has helped me to slow down when I get triggered or when things get intense. This has proven to be a very valuable skill. I honor yoga and this practice because it has inspired growth and transformation on my path. From deeper community, healthier body and mind, to more aware decisions and actions, yoga is my passion and a working art form that I will always carry with me in all of my endeavors.

I Love Yoga!

What is your own vision of the evolution of Yoga in the future?

Returning home after a weekend in Estes at the Colorado Yoga Journal Conference, I am clear that the evolution of Yoga into the future involves taking our yoga off of the mat and into the world. With a mix of social activism and therapy practice, I envision that the path of yoga is opening up to expand its reach to heal the entire globe. This seems like an enormous endeavor. Words like “heal the entire globe’ have never been stated with confidence and conviction like I am feeling and knowing in my heart and the core of my being right this moment.  It is happening in grass roots communities around the world. The breath is the same in every nation, country, ethnicity, and time of day. It is connecting our hearts through this invisible knowing of unity, peace, and compassion for all beings.

First of all, starting a yoga practice may at first be a physical release and outlet. As we form a deeper connection with the lineage and the practice itself we come to our mats to heal. This space of silence and communing with our bodies can open up a sanctuary for becoming whole. Learning about the philosophical ideals of living life as a yogi or yogini pass through our personal being and bleed into all areas of our life. Introducing yoga as a way of healing inspires a list of new modalities to explode including Principle Based Partner Yoga, Yoga for Emotional Health, Yoga for Low Back Pain, and Yoga for Fertility. When we can learn to live in harmony with our self this cascade of growth enters into all of our relations. We can open up to the sacredness of all of life and that each moment is here to teach us something, to heal something deep with in us.

In addition, if we really want to call ourselves a ‘yogi’ or ‘yogini’ we must become an activist. Once we can heal ourselves, it is our duty to expand this health and vitality to reach to all corners of the earth!  It is when we cultivate this respect for our communities, ourselves and our relationship to the elements, that we are truly living our yoga. This respect is contagious and very much needed for the awakening of the planet. Taking our yoga off of the mat and into the world is standing up to make a change for what we see needs evolving on the planet. This form of activism can take many forms including, eating local in season foods, buying organic products, boy-coting stores that do not align with our core beliefs, committing to vote, recycling, and ridding our bikes!  From local to grand, now is the time to enliven this restoration individually an collectively.

Our time spent on the yoga mat is a time to reflect and heal physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. May this practice continue off the mat and into the world through the evolution of this ancient healing art. Encourage yourself and your community to be in action around what you are passionate about and be the change you wish to see internally and externally!

“Humanity is now faced with a stark choice: Evolve or die. … If the structures of the human mind remain unchanged, we will always end up re-creating the same world, the same evils, the same dysfunction.”

Prana Play

Prana Play: Principle Based Partner Yoga Workshop
by Lara Barber

The Bodywork Bistro Living Arts Center is Boulder's beautiful hidden gem movement studio tucked away in the north east part of town. With sprawling views of the entire foot hill front range, it is the perfect setting for this small intimate Partner Yoga workshop.
Principle Based Partner Yoga™ is a style of partner yoga which integrates the body-heart-mind-spirit connection amongst individuals through the use of eleven universal principals:
Union, trust, compassion, creativity, touch, balance, intimacy, silence, grounding, surrender and community.  Do you notice the amount of energy and chi you cultivate during your solo personal yoga practice? Imagine how much more life force is cultivated when you are in connection and relationship with another being! As we flow from posture to posture together as a group, individual, and partnership, there is a sense of freedom and creativity that you don't find in your typical yoga class. It is almost as if we are children again, taping into the playful wisdom that moves us intuitively. We practice simple Thai massage techniques, standing mirrored poses, more challenging balancing postures, seated hip openers, back bends, flying inversions, and group resting poses. Through this simple yet profound style of partner play we keep a light spirit while diving deep into the realm of knowing ourselves through relationship.

Play energizes us and enlivens us. It eases our burdens. It renews our natural sense of optimism and opens us up to new possibilities.
